GoM to Allocate Gas for 7 Power Projects Shortly

The Group of Ministers ( GoM) , a committee headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to meet on 10th November to decide on which project to get how much gas. The GoM is firm on the fact that only projects which are ‘on-schedule’ with commissioning targeted during the 11th plan should be allocated gas.

At its last meeting on July 28, the GoM, headed by Union Finance Minster Pranab Mukherjee, asked the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to give the completion report for seven projects, including the 2,400-MW Samalkot plant in Andhra Pradesh. The CEA stated that commissioning of these projects during the 11th Plan was subject to the suppliers and the developers adhering to the contractual and erection schedule, and a real assessment could be made only after substantial work was done on the ground.

The CEA has submitted 7 gas power project proposals for consideration. The projects include,
  • 1,500-MW Bawana project in Delhi – 4.67 mmscmd
  • Lanco’s 770-MW K0ndapalli expansion project – 3.08 mmscmd
  • GMR’s 768-MW Vemagiri expansion project in Andhra Pradesh – 3.07 mmscmd
  • 702-MW Pipavav project in Gujarat – 2.62 mmscmd
  • 351-MW Hazira unit of the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation – 1.31 mmscmd
  • 225-MW Kashipur project in Uttarakhand – 0.84 mmscmd
  • 2400 MW Samalkot Expansion in Andhra Pradesh – 9.6 mmscmd
The gas will be sourced from Reliance Industries’ eastern offshore KG-D6 fields which are under exploration.
