NTPC , which is setting up the 4000 MW super critical thermal power plant at Kudgi in Bijapur district of north Karnataka has signed a power purchasing agreement with distribution companies in Karnataka. The Ultra Mega Power Project involves installation of five units of 800 MW at an estimated investment of Rs.24,000 crore. Work on the project is expected to commence upon completion of land acquistion, which is expected soon.
NTPC will commission first three units of 2400 MW within 40 months from zero date and the other two units generating 1,600 MW will be built in the second stage. NTPC plans to tie up with Western Coalfields Ltd in Maharashtra and South Eastern Coalfields in Chattisgarh for sourcing coal.
The state government has committed to supply five thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water to the power project from Almatti dam across the Krishna river in the northern district
